About the Executive Master of Public Health Program

Morehouse School of Medicine’s Executive Master of Public Health (eMPH) is an 24-month hybrid program for working professionals who seek a graduate public health degree that prepares them for rapid career growth. Our eMPH curriculum provides the public health theory that supports the social mission of MSM. The eMPH consists of a community health and policy curriculum coupled with additional program requirements to ensure students obtain the practical skills necessary to advance and further as leaders in the public health profession. Driven by the MSM mission, the eMPH will focus on training public health leaders who are fluent in community-focused public health practice, particularly in underserved communities.

Delivered through an online learning platform, the program can be completed in as few as 24 months. Students will engage with classmates and faculty in regular synchronous and asynchronous online sessions, virtual office hours, study sessions, group projects, collaborative assignments, and networking. A campus-based in person session will be required once per semester.  This program consists of 45-48 credit hours and will require students to attend one campus-based in person session per fall and spring semester.

The mission of the Master of Public Health (MPH) program is to prepare individuals who will organize and carry out programs to improve the health, quality of life and well-being of communities and people through education, research and service in public health. The program has an emphasis on people of color, minorities, the poor, and other underserved populations. The MPH program augments the mission and goals of MSM. Our graduates are employed at community-based organizations, as well as local, state, national, and international agencies.  Additionally, many have pursued terminal degrees including MD, PhD, DrPH, and JD, as well as other advanced degrees (e.g., MBS, PA).

Those who pursue an education in public health are well trained in areas of health and administrative policy, analytic methods, technology and information, budget and finance, and communication, all of which are critical skills for public health professionals. Those with an interest in helping others and making a positive difference for their communities, and the greater global community, should consider this degree path. Among those pursuing their degrees in public health are: public health administrators or nutritionists, public health policy makers, professionals in federal or private for-profit or not-for-profit organizations, such as the CDC, hospitals, school districts, and boards of health.

Historical Perspective and Program Goals

MSM is one of five Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) that comprise the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC). MSM is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of individuals and communities; increasing the diversity of the health professional and scientific workforce; and addressing primary health care needs through programs in education, research, and service, with emphasis on people of color and the underserved urban and rural populations in Georgia and the nation.

The MSM MPH Program provides the public health theory that supports the social mission of MSM. The mission of the MPH. Program is to develop, through graduate education, public health leaders who are fluent in community-focused public health research and practice, particularly in underserved communities.  The MPH Program was established in 1995 to address the increasing shortage of underrepresented minorities in leadership positions in the field of public health. The Program was accredited initially in 1999 by the Council on Education for Public Health making it the first accredited M.P.H. Program at an HBCU. The Program was reaccredited in 2007 and again in 2014.  Graduates of the program are working at community-based organizations, as well as local, state, national and international agencies. Additionally, many have pursued terminal degrees including MD, PhD, DrPH, JD, and other advanced degrees (eg. MBA and PA).

MSM is located within the historic West End community in Atlanta, GA. As such, there are ample opportunities for student engagement within the community through participation in service-related activities and community planned events. Our core courses equip students with foundational knowledge and concepts essential for them to better understand the needs of the populations they serve. Additionally, our Community Health course and required community service hours ensure a strong service-learning component to our MPH Program.
